What brand of M1A???

Has anyone purchased a new NM M1A from Springfield lately? Just curious if it ran well out of the box?

I'm looking at Springfield, Fulton & Smith; not too hot about Chienese knockoffs...

The quality at SA has fallen off drastically and i have read about some of their m1a's being sent back twice to be repaired. Its either a Fulton Armory or picking up a Norinco(Forged receiver) and having Fulton rework it for you. Either way you'll end up with a good M14/m1a.

The best bang for the buck in a 308 to me right now is the Russian Izhmash Saiga in 308. I'm shooting off the bench at 100yds and getting 1 1/2" groups with iron sites using south african 308 ball ammo. Its dependable and reliable as its AK47 brother. The Russians did say they did focus on making them accurate. Once you shoot a Saiga in 308 your going to get more in different calibers too. I have them in .223 rem also. Both russian izhmash saigas was a $600 investment.

There are 20rd mags available for the 308 saiga right now too.

As for SA, there ae sometimes issues, and with the NM, you might run into a few more. Remember the chamber is going to be tight and their will be a break-in period. As for accuracy, well it is a NM M1A and it is going to be spot on. As for full disclosure, I owned a SOCOM 16 and I had an issue with extraction due to a burr in the chamber, I polished it out and it was fine.

Now, for the other option, you can build your own from parts. This is time consuming and can be rather tedious tracking down the parts you want. If you go over to SIGForum there are a few threads in the rifle section about members parting together their M1As. I suggest you check them out.

It's sad that Springfield can't/won't get their "stuff" wired tight so that a $1200+ rifle will be reliable out of the box!

If you really want an accurate, reliable and dependable 308 thats affordable too i'd go with the russian izhmash saiga. Its got the AK47 inners plus the chrome lined bore and chamber thats a combination that can't be beat at any price. If you not interested in shooting long range matches i'd grab a saiga first any day. Its probably the only semi auto 308 out there that can take a beating....
