Novice needs advice for home defense shotgun.

I'm in the market for a shotgun to have on hand if I need it; nothing special, just something with a right end and a wrong end that will let the guy on the wrong end know things are going bad for him.

The research I've done, including the internet, a cop (Remington 870) and a Navy Gunners Mate (Wincester 1300) has come up with 3 brands: Remington 870 Synthetic 18" Plain Barrel, Winchester 1300 Defender, and the Mossberg 500 (in any of a number of configs).

So far I'm leaning towards the Winchester because it's a full pound lighter than the Remington. But I am also wondering about the difference between the steel reciever in the Remington versus the alloy reciever in the Winchester. I'm bias against the Mossberg because when I was a kid at summer camp I sometimes had to use a Mossberg .22. I hated that gun because I couldn't hit $h*t with it.

Oh, btw, the cop likes the Remington because 80% of police forces use it and the Squid likes the Winchester for it's "handling".

So thanks in advance for any advice. It is appreciated.

You won't go wrong with any of the shotguns you listed. All will do quite well what you say you want them to do. Pick the one that rings your bell, practice with it and be happy with it.
The difference between a Socialist and a Communist is that the Socialist doesn't have all the guns yet.

Any of the three will work nicely.....I have a 500 behind the door at the ready...I shoot Tactical Shotgun matches with a 870 clone (a Norinco) I now have an 870 that will be pressed into service at the next match. The sound of the shotgun being pumped is enough to let anyone in the house know that they are in deep kimchee......

Any of the three are great if I was going to get a pump it would be an Ithica because I shoot left handed and the Ithica ejects throught the bottom. That said, buying a gun is not like buying a new sofa, you do a little research and buy it. When you bring a fire arm into your house you assume a great deal of responsability. You need to know how to safely handle the weapon, make darn sure you know what your shooting at before you fire. Poeple have many missconseptions about shotguns in general. Yes you can miss it's very easy to do. If your not doing anything on Saturday 22 Oct come out to the Norfolk County Rifle Range and shoot in the Tactical Shotgun match watch the competitors and learn from them. If you don't want to shoot come on out and watch for a bit. If you want more information go to www.ncrr.net or PM Redrum on this forum. I highly encourage you to shoot in the match, the people are very friendly and helpful. If nothing else you will have a lot of fun. It would give you a chance to look at various shotguns out there.

I have a Winchester 1300 Defender in 20 gauge for a HD gun. It's small and light, easy to handle and holds 8 three inch shells. I believe it has more than enough stopping power to handle any HD situation. The action is smooth as butter, and I love it.
