Novice needs advice for home defense shotgun.

I'm in the market for a shotgun to have on hand if I need it; nothing special, just something with a right end and a wrong end that will let the guy on the wrong end know things are going bad for him.
The research I've done, including the internet, a cop (Remington 870) and a Navy Gunners Mate (Wincester 1300) has come up with 3 brands: Remington 870 Synthetic 18" Plain Barrel, Winchester 1300 Defender, and the Mossberg 500 (in any of a number of configs).
So far I'm leaning towards the Winchester because it's a full pound lighter than the Remington. But I am also wondering about the difference between the steel reciever in the Remington versus the alloy reciever in the Winchester. I'm bias against the Mossberg because when I was a kid at summer camp I sometimes had to use a Mossberg .22. I hated that gun because I couldn't hit $h*t with it.
Oh, btw, the cop likes the Remington because 80% of police forces use it and the Squid likes the Winchester for it's "handling".
So thanks in advance for any advice. It is appreciated.
