Hello, I am knew to all of this and have recently purchased a S&W 686 for home protection. I am looking for something that would be good for carry when I go hiking/camping. Here's what I've been thinking so far:

Sig 229
Glock 27
H&K USP Compact

all in 40S&W.

I need some advice on the pros/cons of each.

Thanks very much!!

I have a Sig P229 (.357 & .40 barrels) and love it. If it is for trip protection, I think it is a good choice.

If you like something alittle smaller or something alittle more concealable, the Bersa Thunder .380 works. I love mine and carry it every day.

Where are you going to be hiking or camping? If you're up in Alaska you might run into a Kodiak - around here in Virginia there's smaller game that you might run into. Anything that will take down a 250 LB man will take down a 250 LB animal.

Go with a 460

Ok, I always believe more is better. So in this case a 460 would be ideal. For self protection what more can you ask for. You will be able to shoot through wall, three to four innocent bystanders or a car to get the bad guy. Maybe more is not always better. But the 686 loaded with a .357 will take down most anything in this part of the US. If you go north or west you might want something a little bigger. Just my .02. :n
